Site Updates

If you are interested in the mechanics behind ForestTalk.com, this page will be updated when new features are added, or when changes are made.

January 12, 2013 – Migration to the new server is complete.

January 9, 2013 – ForestTalk.com will be migrated to a new server over the next 48 hours.  We are looking forward to the new server hardware and are not anticipating any downtime.

November 18, 2012 - Work is underway on a really exciting addition to ForestTalk.  If you are interesting in joining a team to beta test new features before they are publicly released, email Lisa at lisa@foresttalk.com

November 16, 2012 -  Released a small update to the comment system today. You can now use your ForestTalk.com, WordPress, Twitter, or Facebook account to comment, or you can type in your email address, and name/pseudonym.  Your comment may be held for moderation. Comments that are off-topic, offensive, or inappropriate are no longer welcome.

October 12, 2012 – Plan to switch to Disqus commenting system shelved for now.

October 11, 2012 - New comment system may be short lived. Still waiting for Disqus to import all of the existing ForestTalk comments, so I will disable the new system for now.

October 9, 2012 – I’m trying out the Disqus comment system for ForestTalk.com.  Setting it up now. Old comments are being imported. May be a day or two before all older comments are visible.

September 27, 2012 – I’ve re-enabled the mobile theme. Let me know if you experience any trouble with it - lisa@foresttalk.com

November 22, 2011 – I’ve temporarily removed the mobile page. There were problems with the mobile page grabbing the latest posts. I hope to repair the problem and restore it soon.

November 18, 2011 – By the end of the day all traffic should be hitting ForestTalk.com on its new, more robust, server. Hopefully this puts an end to all the disruptions during peak hours. There is a slight chance some comments posted this morning might not have made the migration. Please re-post if you don’t see your comment.

November 17, 2011 – Sorry for the intermittent down time today. ForestTalk is so popular that my server is not handling all the extra traffic well.

November 6, 2011 – Working on a mobile skin for ForestTalk.com so when you load ForestTalk.com on your mobile phone, you’ll see a simplified version with just the latest stories and comments. There is a toggle on the mobile page to load the full version instead. If you have any problems, let me know – lisa@foresttalk.com

September 22, 2011 – Two new features today. An events calendar and a new classifieds feature. If you have any event you want to share with other Canadian forestry people, drop me a line with the details and I’ll add it.

March 1, 2011 – Any poll ideas? Drop me a line – lisa@foresttalk.com

December 20, 2010 – AbitibiBowater resumed trading today under the symbol ABH. I’ve updated the stock link.

December 10, 2010 – I’ve cleaned up the main, front page by showing just the first 3 paragraphs of each post with a “Read more” link. This eliminates the long scrolling on the main page to see recent posts.

December 9, 2010 – Our subscription module send an email to all members today, rather than just those that are subscribed to receive notifications. I apologize for this malfunction and am working to isolate the bug so the problem isn’t repeated.

November 6, 2010 – Massive overhaul.  ForestTalk used to run on the blogging software b2evolution, but in recent years WordPress has really overtaken the blogging world.  To allow me to position ForestTalk.com for future upgrades, I have migrated ForestTalk to the WordPress platform today.  All posts and user information have been migrated to the best of my capabilities.  You should still be able to log in with your old username and password.

Changes/Issues:

  • You can use an avatar now with your comments.  I’m using the gravatar avatar system. If you want an avatar beside your comments, set up your email address at http://Gravatar.com and it will automatically appear here on ForestTalk.
  • Several people had multiple user accounts with one email address.  That is no longer permissible on this new platform.
  • Photo section has not been migrated yet, but will be soon
  • Unfortunate the RSS link has changed (unless you were using the Feedburner link).  Update your news reader to use http://foresttalk.com/index.php/feed/
  • You will have to resubscribe to receive posts by email. You can subscribe on the left sidebar. Now you can subscribe by category – that is, if you are only interested in biomass posts, then you can subscribe to just the biomass category. You can also choose plain text posts, or full html.

I’m sure there will be bugs to work out. If you notice anything, drop me a line at lisa@foresttalk.com so I can get it fixed ASAP. Thanks!

September 8, 2010 – I’ve added a ‘biomass’ category.

August 29, 2010 – Send in your forestry pictures to ForestTalk to appear on our Photo Gallery. Email your photos to Lisa@ForestTalk.com.

June 29, 2010 – Be sure to email me with any forestry news you see going on in Canada to Lisa@ForestTalk.com. My news monitoring time has been limited this month (and may be over the next month) and I don’t want to miss any important topics. Thanks!

May 30, 2010 – I’ve made ForestTalk.com slightly wider on the screen in order to accommodate embedded YouTube videos within the text.

May 15, 2010 – All comments are now held in a cue until a moderator approves them for publishing.

November 13, 2009 – HTML line break codes are showing up in the email comment notifications again. I will fix this over the weekend.

November 11, 2009 – Updating the software (b2evolution) to the latest release. Any errors you may encounter this morning will be quickly fixed.

November 1, 2009 – The spam-check software running on ForestTalk.com will often hold comments for moderation if they include http:// links. I will do my best to approve them asap after you post.

October 18, 2009 – Updating the software that runs ForestTalk.com. Some sporadic errors may occur during the update process.

June 19, 2009 – The poll isn’t functioning well after the updates I did earlier this week. I’ve taken it offline so I can repair the code.

June 18, 2009 – Added an automatic “Related Posts” feature for the bottom of each new post. So far the results are about 80% relevant. I’ll keep it around for a bit and see how useful it is.

June 14, 2009 – Updated the blog software behind ForestTalk.com. Updated the header bar. Some errors are showing up here and there. I’m working on squashing those bugs.

June 13, 2009 – Anonymous comments have come to an end today. As always, a very small percentage of the user base has ruined it for everyone. Now you must create a ForestTalk.com account to post. Only your handle or username will be shown with your comment.
