RISI today announced that Richard Garneau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Resolute Forest Products, has been selected as RISI’s 2012 North American CEO of the Year.
RISI gives the award to honor industry leaders who have made significant achievements over the past year. The award will be presented at RISI’s 27th North American Forest Products Conference in Boston, Massachusetts on October 3 – 5, 2012.
Garneau was chosen for his leadership, vision, and strategic accomplishments in a survey of investment analysts and portfolio managers who cover the forest products industry. “The competition was close among this year’s finalists, but Mr. Garneau undeniably stood out among his peers,” said Mark Rushton, Editor, Pulp and Paper International (PPI).
One analyst commented, “Richard Garneau has helped Resolute retake a leadership position in the industry, including the acquisition of Fibrek.” Another said, “He has done an excellent job of deleveraging the company despite the challenges in certain markets, specifically newsprint.”
Before joining Resolute Forest Products, Garneau served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Catalyst Paper Corporation from 2007 through 2010. Prior to his tenure at Catalyst, Garneau was Vice President of Pulp and Paper Operations at Domtar Inc. He also held a variety of roles at Norampac, Copernic.com, Future Electronics, St. Laurent Paperboard, Finlay Forest Industries, and Donohue Inc.
In addition to accepting his award at RISI’s North American Forest Products Conference in Boston, Garneau will join the CEO panel. The conference will feature industry-leading experts and RISI’s economists and engineers as they provide their outlook for the North American and global forest products industry.

Makes you wonder
Oh yea, he bought Snowflake from Abitibi, and now he is getting his “just rewards”

Oh yea, I forgot, he left Catalyst because he wanted to spend more time with his family.
He is a joke IMHO
Well seems like he has done a better job than Patterson or Weaver. Sort of like being the skinniest kid at fat camp.
Wow, the criteria for this award must be very low. Guess this makes him first of the worst.
Unbelievable ! Must of been big bonus points for the devastation of communities, destruction of Unions and collective agreements. Good God, i’m going to throw up. Whats next ? An award to the NS NDP for best coroprate give aways and use of tax payers money to line the pockets of men like Garneau up in Quebec. Or maybe a shiny plaque to the Atlantic Region CEP for outstanding work in the feild of selling their membership down the river. The Rep already won best Union Rep of the year as voted on by NS Companies and Corporations. My oh my what a joke. Hope you all choke on it
What a joke. Instead of saying,”He also held a variety of roles at Norampac….”it should have read ” he also took large severance and pay-out packages… “.These guys are criminals and he is the best. P.S.I heard the award is being presented by Bernie Madoff
When I heard this news it made me sick to my stomach.I think it’s time to organized bus load to go greet him when he gets his award and get him arrested for steeling and fraud.I’m am not supprise with all of this because look at our goverment and look at our justis system, everything is broken in this world.Bring back the capital punishment.
I am sure Richard the chicken hearted HAD to have known about the nice little payout the Fibrek execs voted for themselves right before the sale to Resolute. A network of theives in suits, like Conrad Black.
