Wow ! thats just too funny or too sad, depends on how you look at it. The employees have been the center of this culture change, have they not ? They have sacrificed 18% in their wages and benefits, seen their CA’s almost abolished, lost thousands in their pensions, watched their work get contracted out to scabs, retirees and students and have been treated like workers in a 3rd world country. They have had to watch their Union become insignificant and a tool used by the corporation to get what they want. All the while the Company has been rewarded with bonuses to the elite and insane severance packages to the already rich and prosperous, making money while threatening closure at different locations. Holding governments, communities and workers hostage.

Can’t wait to hear what this new name will be, although I’d rather see what was rejected. My suggestion was “Abitibi Sucks” but I don’t think it got into the top ten.

Obviously the idea to change the name is basically pointless because nobody will forget who they were before. It appears that you were only referring to hourly employees losing wages and benefits, this was also suffered by the salary employees, not everybody on a salary is a corporate hotshot. I am sure if you did send in “abitibi sucks” you didnt sign your name on the form, but still pretty funny.

While you make a point about the unions becoming insignificant, and their bargaining chips being valued extremely low, the salary employees obviously have no bargaining chips and had to take what they got with no chance to fight it.

In times of an industry shrinking and needing to survive, its interesting to think that people would rather be out of a job as opposed to taking a paycut (obviously im generalizing). While pride in your job is obviously wonderful, having a job at all is 100 times better. Is it unfair that they created a debt heavy company that then forced them to cut wages to live? Of course it is, but its over now and hopefully we can take a new name and at least pretend to move on.

    maybe it will get better…..haha

AB is obviously ashamed of their past as well they should be, and they are simply trying to hide who they are from companies that they do business with. You can’t change the spots on a leopard! They have provided the example that other companies in the forest industry now follow in terms of how to treat their loyal employees!
