Chemical spill at Marathon Pulp

Despite all the time spent at a hearing in Toronto to come up with a safe environmental disposal plan for the chemicals at the bankrupt Marathon Pulp mill, a chemical spill as occurred at the site.
About 12,000 litres of diluted pulping liquors leaked on the weekend at the plant property as they were being transferred by pipe to a nearby spill basin.
The Ministry of the Environment has said that the spill has been cleaned up.
Former mill co-owner Tembec, which is conducting the transfer of the chemicals, emphasized the spill was contained quickly and was not necessarily caused by cold weather. The transfer of chemicals will now be carried out in trucks to the basin, rather than risk another spill.
