Kenora and Rainy River Districts warned of severe fire risk

The risk for a large forest fire remains in the Kenora and Rainy River districts of northwestern Ontario.
Back in May, Aviation and Forest Fire Program Officer Terry Popowich said it was only a matter of time until a "mega" forest fire hits Northwestern Ontario due to a jackpine budworm invasion that has killed off large swaths of forests between Fort Frances and Red Lake over the past couple of years.
Ministry of Natural Resources biologist Scott Lockhart said his department has already started working on fire fighting plans for the region. He is urging municipalities to have emergency plans in place in case smoke becomes severe, or if they are called on to assist smaller communities which may need to be evacuated.
