100 new forest fires have started in British Columbia in just the last 24 hours. (9 were human starts and 91 were caused by lightning).
1000 of B.C.'s own provincial firefighters are fighting the fires in their province, with the help of 800 out-of-province fire fighters. Another 750 people have been contracted by the province to cool hot spots and patrol fires. Dozens of helicopters, aircraft and heavy equipment are also spread throughout the provinces as needed. Another 1,000 people are working behind the scenes as fire information officers and incident managers.
International assistance from as far away as Australia is now being considered.
