Weyerhaeuser has signed a letter of intent with an undisclosed company over a possible sale of their Miramichi, New Brunswick OSB mill.
The letter of intent means the unnamed company has exclusive negotiation rights with Weyerhaeuser for the next 60 days. The letter of intent was signed in late June.
While the name of the company has not been disclosed, Weyerhaeuser spokesman Wayne Roznowski confirmed that the company is interested in running the facility as an OSB mill, and that the wood supply was a key issue.
Weyerhaeuser's plans to decommission its OSB mill in town are on hold, even though the province's Environment Department approved the company's environmental impact assessment last week.
"We're certainly not going to begin a decommissioning process at this time, even though we now have all the permits in place," said Roznowski.
The unnamed company is not the first to express interest in the mill.
Last summer, Quebec-based Arbec Forest Products expressed a heavy interest in the mill at Morrison Cove, but eventually pulled out of the negotiations a few months ago after an attempt to get a Crown wood allocation from the provincial government was unsuccessful. The province countered the company did not present a business plan to the province.
The Weyerhaeuser mill closed in June 2007, putting 140 people out of work.
