Nova Scotia Power Board approves NewPage biomass burning plan

Just hours after the Chairman of Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board's slapped the wrist of Nova Scotia Power for fast-tracking the hearing before the controversial plan even had the blessing of the utility’s board of directors, the Board of Nova Scotia Power met and approved a resolution to proceed with a Cape Breton pulp mill biomass project.
The power corporation and NewPage Port Hawkesbury Ltd. now have an untendered deal to go ahead with the project and they are before the review board again today requesting approval for a 25-year biomass project.
Nova Scotia Power’s energy purchases normally go through an open bidding competition.
Because the project will cost NewPage $1 billion over 25 years to buy the biomass energy, it can't finalize equity financing for the project without a power purchase agreement.
