A helicopter pilot and his passenger - a conservation officer - luckily escaped harm when the helicopter they were flying in caught fire while they were working to douse a small forest fire in Manitoba.
The helicopter was one of two that were leased by Manitoba Conservation and were being used to contain a fire by dropping water until a water bomber could arrive.
The pilot smelled smoke inside the helicopter and quickly landed. Just after the two men got out of helicopter, it burst into flames and was destroyed.
The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, but police said it will be a difficult task owing to the extent of the damage to the helicopter.
No dollar estimate was provided on the amount of damage.
