Northern Pulp in Pictou County, Nova Scotia was rumoured last week to be close to another round of layoffs.
Yesterday it was confirmed that the mill is shedding 20 positions through a retirement and reorganization plan.
Members of Local 440 of the Communications, Energy, and Paperworkers Union have agreed to the plan.
Last year, a retirement package saw 34 people leave the mill, which suffered intermittent shutdowns over the winter to repair an effluent pipe running under Pictou Harbour to the Boat Harbour treatment plant.
A few weeks ago, the provincial government granted Northern Pulp a $15-million interest-bearing loan to replace the pipe, execute the 2009 maintenance shutdown, and carry out other capital programs.
The retirement program will take place over the next 19 months.
