Domtar is seeking a tax refund in Cornwall, ON

Domtar has closed its mill in Cornwall, Ontario in March 2006. The property was sold to Paris Holdings in September 2006 for $4 million.
Now Domtar is looking to get back $1 million in taxes that it paid to the city of Cornwall during its final years of operation (2004-2006).
It is believed that the taxes paid by the new owners of the property, Paris Holdings, in 2007 and 2008, may also be in question.
Domtar is pushing to have the property reassessed. In 2005 the property was assessed for roughly $18 million. The company is now seeking to have the property reassessed to $9 million in 2004, $8 million in 2005 and $7 million in 2006.
City councillor Andre Rivette is angry. "They shouldn't get five cents back. They were paying taxes based on their (property) assessment. That's what they should have been paying."
Cornwall CAO Paul Fitzpatrick said the issue will likely be decided at an assessment review board hearing in late spring or summer.
