Atikokan coal plant to switch to wood pellets

January 21st, 2009 | Posted in Environmental News | 2 comments »

Ontario Power Generation is switching its coal-fired power plant in Atikokan to a biomass burning plant by 2012.

The plan is to burn wood pellets instead of coal.

Ontario then plans on looking into converting its 3 other coal-fired power plants, including the giant Nanticoke plant on Lake Erie, to burn wood pellets, wheat husks or other plant material.

Currently there aren’t enough wood pellets in the supply chain to keep residential pellet stoves warm, so where will all this biomass come from?

  1. It’s all going on costs of paper, pulp and board industry…
Here in Europe, we are just learning our lessons –> end of days all this industry will drift towards south – but this is just what our today’s world wants to happen…

I’m sure McGuinty knows, otherwise it would have been a complete show of stupidity to order the closure of coal fired generating stations without an plan to continue the supply of electricity to Ontario by some other means.
