Weyerhaeuser idles Hudson Bay OSB plant

Weyerhaeuser has decided to indefinitely shutdown its Hudson Bay oriented strandboard plant in Saskatchewan in July.
170 people will be out of work.
For a town of 1,600 people, the indefinite loss of 170 jobs will be significant. Located 300 km northeast of Saskatoon, it is likely many will look for work elsewhere.
The planned shutdown follows a February announcement by Weyerhaeuser that its Hudson Bay softwood plywood mill and Carrot River softwood stud mill, which had been temporarily shut down since January 2007, would close permanently.
The plant is the last Weyerhaeuser facility operating in Saskatchewan. The company closed the Prince Albert pulp mill and the Big River and Wapawekka sawmills in 2006.
Weyerhaueser says the indefinite closure is market related. The mill is modern and efficient and there are strong hopes that it will be operating again.
