Sep 27, 2006 | In Mill Closures & Layoffs | 1 feedback »
Lay offs have affected 116 jobs in Domtar's pulp and paper mill in Espanola, Ontario. 90 positions are unionized, 26 are salaried.
The lay offs are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, the reductions will be done through re-assignment, attrition and direct layoffs.
Domtar has estimated that these job cuts will save them $10 million a year.
Lynne Gibson, a mill spokesperson, said about the layoffs: "It stems primarily from our continued need to reduce costs and create efficiencies due to the strength of the Canadian dollar, intense international competition from South America and Asia, and the higher costs of energy, transportation, chemicals and fibre."
Domtar is Espanola's largest employer.
